Rubber Rulers & Rubber Protractors
Sometimes, in the heat of the moment (or is it by being threatened by competitors at the start) organisers have been known to give out the wrong bearing when one or other transmitter was not heard at the start. It is when being confronted by 20 or so hyped up competitors that the organiser is at his most vulnerable and could sometimes do with a body guard. A couple of instances come to mind when John Drakely, running events for the Slade (East Birmingham) club, gave an approximate bearing and distance for a Sunday qualifier event south of Birmingham, where the bearing was within the normal limits + 10o in those days, but his ruler was certainly made of rubber. He gave a distance of less than 10 miles. When the station was found it was checked as regards distance from the start, and found to be over 25 miles. An instance of rubber ruler syndrome.
A second item, again with John D, was a double night event in east Birmingham, where he gave an approximate bearing for the wrong station, but even then it was out of the normal tolerance. An instance of Rubber protractor syndrome. We understand its incurable....
